《산의 기운》은 계룡산, 북한산, 설악산, 월출산 등 산의 모습을 조형적으로 함축해 색과 구도를 단순화한 작업이다. 이 화백은 새벽녘에 산에 오르며 얻은 에너지를 되새기며 산의 형태와 색채를 자신만의 시각으로 변형해 특유의 개성을 담아낸다. 초기 작업인 수묵화 시리즈에 이어 서양화 재료를 혼합한 현재의 작업까지 《산의 기운》 시리즈에서는 색과 형태가 점차 단순화되는 과정을 볼 수 있다. “전부 채워내고 나서야 비로소 비울 수 있다”는 동양 철학적 사고를 접목한 이춘환은 작품을 완성시키는 과정을 하나씩 비워내는 작업을 통해 오히려 산세의 웅장함을 드러낼 수 있음을 주장한다. 대자연을 품에 안은 삼라만상의 존재가치를 생동감 있게 담아낸 《산의 기운》 시리즈는 마치 산의 현장에서 그 모습을 관조하듯, 자연과의 교감을 이끌어낸다.
In “The Mood of the Mountain” series, Lee Choun Hwan simplifies colors and composition, by aesthetically representing the mountain scenery such as Gyeryongsan, Bukhansan, Seoraksan, Wolchulsan, etc. He expresses his individuality by modifying the colors and the forms of mountains based on his perspective. From his early ink paintings to current paintings combined with western materials, “The Mood of the Mountain” series shows magnificent features of the mountains through the process to simplify colors and features. Lee works on simplifying the process leading up to perfection, grafting eastern philosophy onto his painting. Therefore, “The Mood of the Mountain” series presenting the value of the universe enables people to feel the vitality of nature as if they were seeing the mountain scenery in person.
